Quarter Final Reports from the 2003-2004 Season of the CPO National Cup The Quarter-Final results mean that a new name will be on the Tophy this season ! Also, the Semi-Final draw, in contrast to last season, contains three teams that play in Church Leagues, two of them from the Merseyside Christian League, with the other coming from a Secular League. Despite the fact that it snowed in many parts of the Country, all matches were played on the scheduled day and now the countdown begins towards the Final * * Please put this date aside and try and come to this great event: 8th May, 2004 - KO: 3.00pm at Sixfields Stadium, Northampton Town FC. Each team that entered the CPO Cup gets 2 complimentary tickets. Why not also bring others along!! More details in our next mailing Mill Lane Church West Derby, Liverpool 4 v 1 Swansea Inter Churches The game was played on a good pitch, overlooking the Mersey and the snow covered Welsh hills! The Swansea side had braved the long journey from a snow bound South Wales but, with a few key players missing, were somewhat depleted. Mill Lane had the better of the opening exchanges and, allied with some sloppy Welsh defending, took a deserved two goal lead. Swansea managed to equalise just before the break and then scored a great second goal to equalise, within minutes of the restart. However, Mill Lane stepped up a level, soon going back in the lead and Swansea were struggling to respond but with 10 minutes left, the Welsh scored to set up an exciting finish, although it wasnÕt quite enough. The game was played in a good spirit and hosted well by Mill Lane! FC Bootle, Liverpool 4 v 2 United Christian Centre, Chelmsford UCC, Chelmsford travelled up to Liverpool the night before to prepare well for their first ever CPO Cup Quarter-Final. They had the better of the first half and took the lead after 25 minutes but Bootle gradually got back in the game and equalised with 10 minutes to go, to take the game into extra time. UCC again went into the lead in the first period of extra time but the longer the game went on, the more Bootle dominated and their more direct approach finally paid off when they equalised and then took the lead. The Merseysiders scored a breakaway 4th goal with seconds to go as UCC pushed forward, to take them through to their first ever Semi-Final. Kings Sports, Herts 0 v 2 Bridge Street United, Leeds Holders, Kings Sports hosted a Bridge Street team brimming with confidence from their away win at Sporting Ō87, Suffolk in the previous round. The game was even to start with but the Yorkshiremen looked lively and caused Kings problems at the back all afternoon! However, it was a mistake by the normally reliable KingÕs keeper, that gifted Bridge Street a goal and Kings struggled to get back in the game up to half-time. Kings were stirred into action in the second half but Bridge Street continued to make it difficult with their ability to look after the ball when it matterd and after 20 minutes, a wonderful solo run and clinical finish put them 2 up. Kings continued to battle to get back in the game, hitting the bar 4 times but the pressure was not enough and a superb team performance gave the Leeds team a great victory and secure a Semi-Final place for the first time. Lords XI, Tiverton 1 v 0 Christchurch Roxeth, Middlesex Christchurch made the long journey down to Devon, experienced a close game and were hosted very well. Both teams were in the Quarter-Finals for the first time but it was the Middlesex team that started the stronger and had the better of the play, creating most of the first half chances. They hit the bar and post but were unable to score. Christchurch kept up the pressure after the break and created more chances, hitting the woodwork twice more but as the game wore on, it became more tense, with defences dominating and both teams knew that one goal would probably settle it! With 3 minutes to go, a long cross-field ball was missed by a Christchurch defender leaving a Lords XI forward with a one on one and he side footed past the keeper! Lords soaked up considerable pressure during the game but scored when it matterd to take them through, in a game played in a good spirit. |
