2008-2009 Season of the National Christian Cup

Reports from Round Two

Go direct to Reports for the National Christian Trophy

There were a couple of real shocks in the 2nd Round as well as some other big names that fell after being drawn against strong contenders. Current NCC holders St Wilfrids (Newcastle) and St Peters Everton (Liverpool), last years first ever National Christian Trophy winners, went out at the first time of asking. Also 2005 Semi Finalists Chessington KC (Surrey), Breckfield Crusaders (Liverpool), Westside (Wandsworth) and last years Quarter Finalists South Parade (Liverpool) and Ecclesia (Sheffield), all went out of the Competition.

In the 3rd round we have 7 Merseyside Church League teams remaining. As it happens 6 of them are in the top half of the draw and 2 will definitely go out as there are 2 Liverpool derbys!! All in all, there are 10 Northern teams, 1 from the Midlands, 1 Welsh and 4 Southern teams left in the National Cup.

Virtually all 2nd Round games were played in a great spirit, representing well the Christian-based Competition. This was an improvement from the 1st Round, when 2 teams were reported for displaying wrong attitudes in games. Just to remind all teams, that if indiscipline is shown in any National Christian Competition match, teams may be scrutinised by an Independent Match Observer. Please be warned and ensure that all your NCC games are played in the right spirit! Thanks.

National Section

In a game that will be remembered more for the weather than the football, Bolton Ambassadors beat Breckfield Crusaders (Liverpool) 4-2 on penalties after the score finished 1-1. In encircling fog and on a boggy pitch, Bolton started very well but it was Breckfield who scored first. Ambassadors kept pressing and equalised with 20 minutes left. With the fog drawing in, both sides decided to forego extra time and go straight to penalties. Bolton scored all 4 of theirs but Breckfield had one superbly saved and then hit the bar with their 4th.

Bridge Street United (Leeds) beat newcomers Picture House Celtic (Liverpool) 3-2 in a game of two halves. Bridge Street dominated the first half and were good value for their 2-0 half time lead but PHC were a different team after the break and scored early on. They always seemed likely to score a second and when they did equalise with just 15 minutes left, they looked like they were going on to win it. However, a defensive error between their keeper and a defender allowed Bridge Street in for a late winner in a very dramatic finish!

In a Yorkshire derby, Bentley Baptist (Doncaster) and Ossett Logos made a very cagey start. It was tight early on but the deadlock was broken after Bentley scored from a great corner. Bentley then worked hard to get the second to lead 2-0 at HT. The 2nd half started evenly with Ossett employing a 5 man midfield to try and stop Bentley getting forward but this failed as Doncaster soon took a 3 goal lead. Ossett did pull a goal back to set up a tense finish to the game only for Bentley to wrap things up with a late goal, to win 4-1 in a very hard fought game which belied the end result!

A surprise was in store in this game in a fiercely contested game, which saw Selsdon Baptist (Croydon) edge out the current NCC holders, St Wilfrids (Newcastle) 2-1. Selsdon took the lead with a header after half an hour but as St Wilfdrids finally found some fluency, Selsdon had their keeper to thank with a stunning double stop and then a penalty save. Selsdon wrapped up the game, scoring a second from a loose ball with 20 minutes remaining. St Wilfrids made a late desperate attempt to get back in the game but their consolation goal in the final minutes proved not to be enough!

Trinity St Marys (Liverpool) hosted a local derby with newcomers Belgrave Gateacre Chapel and what a game it turned out to be! Trinity took the lead after a long throw was deflected into the net only for Belgrave to equalise soon after. However Trinity regained the lead just before the break from a penalty, when they beat the Belgrave offside trap but their forward was taken down by the keeper! Belgrave again got back in the game to equalise and in a real end to end affair, with both teams dead on their feet, it finished 1-1. So to penalties, with teams missing 1 each early on but Trinity eventually won 7-6!

Last seasons Semi finalists, Focus Quest (Liverpool) started the better side against Clarendon (Birmingham), with some slick passing creating a few chances. They took the lead, from a great volley on the edge of the box and soon went 2-0 up. Clarendon had to play a League game in the morning but now woke up and got stuck into the game and just before half time got one back. The 2nd half was tight with neither side creating any glaring opportunities but after 65 minutes Focus scored from a rebounded penalty to win 3-1! The whole match was played in a fantastic spirit and every tackle was hard but fair.

Swallownest Bethesda (Sheffield) travelled across the Pennines to play Grassendale St Marys (Liverpool) in what turned out to be an excellent cup tie played in the right spirit. The Grassendale goal was under a lot of pressure and Swallownest had numerous chances but did not capitalise, whilst Grassendale broke a few times and scored twice! HT 2-0. Both teams then had good spells but a defensive error allowed Grassendale to score a 3rd. Swallownest changed things by playing 3 up front but the pressure exerted was to no avail, although the 3-0 scoreline did flatter the Merseysiders!

Regional Section (South & Wales)

In a highly competitive game that could have gone either way and with lots of goals, Emmanuel Cardiff just scraped through 4-3 at Westside (Wandsworth), the lead having changed hands throughout. Both teams showed imagination and passion on a poor quality pitch and although the game was played in an excellent spirit, a foolish red card by a Westside player, midway through the second half, tipped the balance Cardiffs way. Westside were leading at the break only for Cardiff to take advantage of the extra man for a 3-2 lead but after Westside drew level, Cardiff then scored a late winner!

Chessington KC (Surrey) hosted newcomers Gold Hill Baptist (Bucks) on a wet and muddy pitch. Chessington had lots of possession and Gold Hill had to mainly play a counter attacking game. Just before the break Chessington went one up. Gold Hill made some tactical changes and soon got back in the game from a speculative shot that the KC keeper should have dealt with! The game had now changed with Gold Hill the more dominant force and they used this to their advantage to score twice more. However, with 20 minutes left, they had a player sent off for 2 yellows but survived the onslaught, to win 3-1!

The game between New Life (Croydon) and St Thomas More ARYPT (Coventry) took place after some uncertainty if it should be played. New Life took the lead after 15 minutes and were well in control to lead 1-0 at HT. However ARYPT soon equalised after a great pass inside the full back, which then saw them having the run of the game for 20 minutes, where they should have scored 3 times! But as is so often the case, New Life went up the other end to score! As St Thomas pushed men forward, New Life scored 3 more to win with a somewhat flattering 5-1 scoreline, in a game played in good spirit.

Last seasons finalists Kings Sports (Herts) travelled down to Kent to play NewGen (Sidcup) on a wet day. Kings started very brightly with a few good chances but as the half wore on NewGen began to boss the game and definitely held the upper hand, looking the more likely to score and with just 1 minute before HT, did just that! Kings were rattled but came out determined. In an even 2nd half, both ends saw action but once Kings equalised with 20 minutes to go, NewGen tired. Kings got 2 more goals to round off a very shaky 3-1 win! NewGen battled hard and Kings knew they had been in a tough game!!

Regional Section (North & Midlands)

The game started brightly for Mosaic (Leeds) hosting 2004 Finalists Mill Lane Churches, West Derby (Liverpool), passing the ball well and retaining possession. Their bright start was awarded with a goal sweetly struck from the edge of the box. This suddenly kicked West Derby into gear as virtually directly from the kick off, they equalised and then took control of the game, scoring two more to make it 3-1 at HT. Mill Lane soon scored a 4th and then a 5th, with still 30 minutes to play, to win with a flattering 5-1 scoreline. Mosaic didn't ever give up and with no yellow cards, the game was played in a brilliant manner.

In a Merseyside derby, newcomers St Aidans, a Division 3 side played 1st Division South Parade, who themselves made it through to last seasons NCC Quarter Finals. St Aidans had decided to opt for the National Christian Cup this season and so would they face a bit of an uphill struggle? Absolutely not, as the underdogs completely turned the tables and indeed a few heads, with this excellent performance. Aidans completely overwhelmed their more experienced opponents and came out winners by the extraordinary margin, 7-0. Will they be the surprise package of this years competition?!!

Meols St Johns (Wirral) travelled across to Yorkshire to play Ecclesia (Sheffield) and two footballing sides produced an end to end flowing game, with hardly a foul throughout. Meols enjoyed the greater possession but with both defences in control, clear cut chances were few. Midway through the first half, Meols did manage to take the lead via a well taken goal but Ecclesia came out in the 2nd half pushing more men forward. The Meols defence held strong and midway through, broke with a flowing counter attack, resulting in a precise finish to win 2-0. A thoroughly enjoyable game played in the correct spirit.

Genesis (Loughborough) hosting Toft Tornados (Cheshire), kicked off and within 30 seconds a midfielder was taken down to win Genesis a penalty and go 1-0 up. Tornados came back strongly in the mist and scored twice, one fired into the corner from the edge of the box and the other ricocheting off the forward. Tornados nearly grabbed an excellent third but for a great save by the Genesis keeper. HT 1-2. Genesis then turned the game on its head straight away with 2 quickfire goals, a header at the far post and then converting a long punt downfield! Genesis finished the game with a late goal to win 4-2.

2008-2009 Season of the National Christian Trophy

Reports from Round Two

It is difficult to know exactly if there were any shock results in the 2nd Round of the Trophy, as there are so many new teams this season. Interestingly though, only 2 teams in this season’s 3rd Round (last 16), Anfield FC (Liverpool) and 2008 Trophy Finalists, Welwyn St Marys (Herts) made it to this stage last year!

There are 8 Southern teams in this year’s last 16, representing the Herts & Borders Churches League, the Chiltern Churches League, the Southern Area Churches League, the Solent Churches League and the Kingston & District League. There are 4 teams from the Merseyside Christian League, 3 from the Derby Churches League and 1 from the South Manchester Churches League, to, so far(!), make it an even North vs South split!!

Attempting to identify the stronger teams left in the competition will be a bit like knowing what is likely to happen next in the present economic downturn!? BUT(!!) the “apparently strong” teams left could possibly include Anfield FC (Liverpool), Atlantic Electrical (Liverpool), Elim Bootle (Liverpool), Littleover Christians (Derby), Mansfield AFC, Testwood Baptist (Southampton) and Welwyn St Marys (Herts). Who knows? Exciting to see it how all develops!

It seems that most 2nd Round Trophy games were played in a great spirit, representing the Christian-based Competition, SO PLEASE keep going in this manner and ensure that there is a right attitude in ALL games!!

National Section

In a real game of two halves, Mansfield AFC fought back from a 0-3 deficit at half time to defeat Champions Church (Birmingham) by 4-3. Mansfield started well enough, creating good chances but were undone by some swift counter-attacking moves by Champions. However Mansfield gained momentum early in the second half, which saw Champions on the back foot from the off. The comeback began in the first few minutes as Mansfield gradually wore their opponents down and was completed when the Mansfield centre forward completed his hat-trick towards the end of the game.

Atlantic Electrical (Liverpool) beat West Derby Warriors (Liverpool) 7-0, but the scoreboard probably was not a fair reflection of play. Atlantic’s keeper was in top form to thwart early West Derby pressure, but as Atlantic managed to get back in the game, they took a foot hold, scoring twice for a 2-0 half time lead. Again the Atlantic keeper was on form after the break as Warriors tried to get back in the game! Once Atlantic had scored the third goal, this killed the game off and sparked a flurry of four late goals, in a game played with great passion but in the right spirit!

A fantastic game saw Elim Bootle (Liverpool) win 6-3 at Heathervale Baptist Reserves (Surrey) in a somewhat extraordinary game, which needed extra time! Despite scoring first from the spot, Elim found themselves 3-1 down, with just 7 minutes left, as Heathervale had taken advantage of good pressure and some poor defending! However an Elim tactical switch brought about the desired effect, as 2 late goals levelled the game! So into extra time and really it was Elim all the way as they took control and scored 3 more in a game played in a great spirit throughout!

Regional Section (South & Wales) Wymondley Christians (Stevenage) needed extra time and then penalties to finally overcome United Churches Fellowship Reserves (Kent). Wymondley went ahead from a penalty but UCF equalised just before half time. The 2nd half was fairly even, although Wymondley were just shading it and hit the bar a couple of times. However, it was UCF that took the lead with just 20 minutes to go, only for Wymondley to level, to take the game into extra time. The teams again couldn’t be separated and the final score was 2-2. Wymondley edged the penalty shoot out 5-4!

Mordern Baptistas (Surrey) edged out United Chelmsford Churches Reserves 3-2. It was Chelmsford who broke away to score first after some early Mordern pressure but Mordern equalised straight from the restart. In an even 1st half it finished 1-1 at HT. Mordern then gradually took control and scored twice to lead 3-1. UCC then reorganised and soon began to get the upper hand. When a forward launched the ball over the Mordern keeper into the back of the net from well outside the area, UCC had the bit between their teeth. Mordern Baptistas were reeling but were able to hold out to go through.

Last season’s Trophy Finalists, Welwyn St Marys (Herts) travelled down to Essex, to play Romford Community Church, starting with only 10 men. After just 1 minute, they conceded a penalty to go 1 down but fought back to score twice from two back post headers. St Marys continued to apply impressive pressure considering still playing with 10 and made it 3-1 at HT. St Marys then resumed with 11 men but Romford scored against the run of play and continued to counter attack. The Essex side kept pressing and with 10 minutes to go levelled but St Marys got a deserved late winner in an amazing tense finish!

In an end to end game played at pace and in a great spirit, Testwood Baptist Church, Southampton won 3-1 at Molesey Community Church, (Surrey). A well worked corner routine put them ahead and then a penalty gave them a 2-1 half time lead following a Molesey equaliser. Testwood scored again early in the second half and created more chances after that but Molesey then had 2 gilt edged opportunities to get back in the game but squandered them both in a tense finish!! The teams enjoyed superb hospitality after the game.

A close game between Westside Reserves (Wandsworth) and Kings Sports Reserves (Herts) saw the home team just triumph 4-3. Westside started with an average age backline of 46 and opened the scoring early on only for Kings to equalise. However Westside then controlled the game and scored two more to ensure a 3-1 half time lead. It was a different tale after the break as Kings fought back to dominate, creating some good chances. With 20 minutes left, Kings got one back to ensure a tense finish. Westside then got a 4th with minutes to go only for Kings to make it 3-4 but it was too little, too late.

Hazlemere Saints (Wycombe) beat Windsor Saints 5-4 on penalties after the teams finished 2-2 after extra time in a real game of two halves! Windsor took an early lead and doubled their advantage for a 2-0 interval lead. Hazlemere then finally started to play a bit, rediscovering their ability to attack! They scored early on and kept battling including having a good penalty appeal turned down until they equalised with a late scrambled equaliser! With no more goals in extra time, Hazlemere just scraped through in the penalty shoot out to finish a game played in the right spirit.

Regional Section (North & Midlands)

Kirkby Christian Fellowship Reserves (Liverpool) just edged through 3-2 away at AOG United (Derbyshire). It was a foggy, damp day in Derbyshire and the game was not helped by a muddy pitch but this did not stop the Merseysiders taking an early lead after a goal kick had been headed on. KCF were always able to keep their noses in front but AOG played well and should have drawn level at the death but an AOG player missed from very close range!

A combination of the late arrival of the away team and the weather, with Sheffield fog closing in all of the time, meant that the game between Arbourthorne Community Church (Sheffield) and Anfield FC (Liverpool) was in danger of not starting. However, it was eventually shortened to 30 minutes each way. In the end a single Anfield goal was enough to win the game 1-0, although the game was not really played in the right spirit and Anfield had 2 players cautioned, which apparently could have been more! Who knows what might have happened with the full 90 minutes!?

Coventry Saints, on their National Trophy debut, hosted Derby City Church but they went down 1-4. Coventry having won most of their League matches this season, started well and were unlucky not to take the lead. However, Derby changed their formation which proved a master stroke as they then dominated. They scored 2 quick goals on the half hour to lead 2-0 at HT. Coventry had a great chance soon after the break only to be thwarted by a superb tackle and Derby then scored a 3rd with an excellent 25 yard free kick. Coventry briefly threatened by pulling 1 back but a late 4th Derby goal made the game safe.

Littleover Christians (Derby) beat Skelmersdale Legends 7-0. A late avalanche of 4 goals gave the scoreline a flattering feel but early on it was all very even with few chances for either side. It was not until 30 minutes into the game that Littleover scored their first, a sharp strike from the edge of the box and then added a 2nd just before the break. The contest was effectively over 10 minutes into the 2nd half when a lob beat the Skem keeper but surprisingly it was Skem who had more possession, although they created little. Defensive mistakes cost them dear as they gifted Littleover those late goals!!
